As a child, summer equaled holiday. We used to stay with our grandparents in the countryside for two and a half months, then my parents would come and get us and we´d go to the seaside together, for a couple of weeks or so. Summer meant reading, taking care of my little garden, meeting with my friend Irina and getting tanned. It also meant loads of fresh fruit, straight from the tree, running around freely, building huts and getting “infested” with fleas from the neighbour´s cats.
Nowadays, summer for me is first and foremost a holiday somewhere in the South of Europe. 😉 For the rest of the season, wearing dresses without stockings, walking bare foot on the grass and eating yummy salads is as good as it gets in Scandinavia. If you´re really lucky, a couple of days on the beach and some holiday guests make the picture complete!
Yesterday afternoon we met with a couple of friends over a beer and some Mexican food. We´ve been regulars at Café Sara for more than 12 years now and it´s never disappointed us. The food is yummy, the prices- low and the atmosphere- perfect, whether you´re a broke student or a millionaire. It´s neither more, nor less than it pretends to be and that´s perhaps its recipe for success. A quick lunch, a late night dinner, a couple of beers in the backyard or simply a Friday evening with friends, with café Sara you´ve got it right! And you don´t see any slick stuck-up people as in the Western part of the city (we don´t care too much for them).
My father is visiting for a couple of weeks and since I didn´t have a lot of work these days, Sam and I got to be tourists, too. Today we went to the Akershus Fortress, where I´d only been a couple of times before, but which remains a “hidden gem” by the harbor. It´s from medieval times and they still use most of the buildings housing museums, the National Defense Guard, military offices and this sort of things. The cobblestone alleys and the low houses make you feel like you´re traveling back in time. If only there hadn´t been this many cars parked around!
