Chocolate cake with meringue top

This cake is the bomb! Reading the Norwegian recipe on Mat på bordet made me so curious, I just had to try it myself! I mean I love meringue and dark chocolate, but a combination of the two?! Divine! 😉



  • 150g butter
  • 100g chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • 100g sugar
  • 200g flour
  • 2tbs cocoa
  • 1tsp baking powder
  • 100ml yoghurt

Melt butter and chocolate in the micro or over boiling water, without letting the bowl touch the water. Let it cool for 5 minutes and add the eggs. Sift flour, sugar, cocoa and baking powder and mix with the chocolate mass. Add yoghurt and blend. Use a cake form and grease proof paper and bake in the oven for 30 minutes at 180 degrees C.

For the meringue

  • 3 egg whites
  • 150g sugar
  • 100g dark chocolate, melted

Start whipping the egg whites with sugar, a table spoon at a time about 5 minutes before the alarm starts ringing. I use my kitchen aid, but a good whisk will do, too. Towards the end, add the meltet chocolate that has cooled down a bit meanwhile. Take the cake out of the oven and spread the mixture on top. Bake for 20 more minutes at 180 degrees.
